State Budget Hearing at Oxnard College

Based on legislation I authored last year, I am proud to announce that the 2015 Budget Act provided $60 million for a one-time incentive grant program aimed at improving community college remediation practices, called the Basic Skills and Student Outcomes Transformation Program.

Almost 75% of entering California’s community college students are deemed unprepared for college-level work and in need of basic skills courses. The goal of this program is to increase the number of these students who complete basic skills, enabling them to pursue a college certificate or degree.

Community College districts can apply for these grants to help them adopt or expand the use of evidence-based models for basic skills assessment, placement, instruction, and student support.

I am hosting a budget hearing at Oxnard College on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 10 a.m. to discuss implementation of the program and provide information on how districts can apply for the grants.
