SACRAMENTO –The California State Assembly has passed Assembly Bill 2532, authored by Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin (D—Thousand Oaks). The bill allows District Attorneys to file a petition for a Gun Violence Restraining Order (GVRO) on behalf of law enforcement officers in civil court proceedings.
“I am pleased to see that AB 2532 passed through the Assembly Public Safety Committee and Assembly Floor with bipartisan support,” stated Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin. “GVROs have been an effective tool for preventing gun violence, but this tool is underutilized in California. We will never know exactly how many lives GVROs will save.”
GVROs have been utilized the most in jurisdictions where local prosecutors are able to assist in their processing. DA’s are uniquely and ideally situated to assist law enforcement officers with this type of court filing and provide legal expertise and courtroom experience to the GVRO effort. This bill can help increase their use and remove guns from dangerous situations that don’t need to end with a gun-related death. AB 2532 is co-sponsored by the Ventura County District Attorney, Gregory Totten and the California District Attorneys Association. AB 2532 is now headed to the Senate Public Safety Committee for a vote.
