(Oxnard, CA) – Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin (D-Thousand Oaks) hosted a special meeting of the State Assembly’s Budget Subcommittee No. 2 on Education Finance at Oxnard College to discuss a new $60-million, one-time incentive grant program, funded by legislation she authored, to improve community college remediation practices. Almost 75% of entering California’s community college students are deemed unprepared for college-level work and in need of basic skills courses. Irwin and students explain the necessity of programs that aim to increase the number of students who complete basic skills, enabling them to pursue a college certificate or degree.
